The Devil is Not in the Details

I’m sure this will solve all their problems.

I always wondered why new sports teams often handed such an important part of their new product to marketing folks with dubious ideas. Nothing was worse than early MLS with ridiculous names like “The Wiz”, “Fusion”, “Burn” and “Clash”. Somewhere along the lines verbs became very in with marketing folks for sports teams names. The Devil Rays name is not nearly as bad and comes from around the same time. While not a great name, neither is the Rays. The advantage being most everyone calls them the “Rays” now anyway so…

But before we lay all bad sports names at the feet of modern marketing, it’s worth remembering the Perfectos and Superbas are vintage old time names and suck every bit as bad if not worse.

As for the Devil Rays Rays, it’s certainly hopeful that they might finally be turning things around, but they have an awful tough division to deal with and it won’t be easy.

The Rays are trying to resolve their biggest problem – their stadium.

This came out of nowhere but talks with governments in FLA have commenced for a new “retro” kinda thing. Boy did this stay quiet, I hadn’t read any speculation, anywhere.

Eh, they reboot Batman every decade or so, so why not a baseball team?

I know f*ck all about soccer, but I have always wondered what the hell they were thinking with my hometown Columbus Crew. A crew of what? The logo shows vaguely blue collar guys with helmets, but Columbus has virtually no industrial history whatsoever. I get the feeling that Lamar Hunt basically said “well, alliteration always works, so let’s just go with Crew so I can get to my tee time now.”

There was a funny version of the Crew’s logo floating around a while back that had a picture of the Village People inside the area where the hard hat guys are. Can’t find it though.

The Burn logo with the horse that vomits flames was worse.
