Nick Piecoro has a piece in today’s Arizona Republic about Stephen Drew’s upcoming season in which I get a mention. I really appreciate that some of the sportswriters now see statistical work as a means to explain what it is many people actually see during the games (like Drew hitting into a little bad luck). I think this helps the cause of statistical analysis and greatly improves the quality of sportswriting as well, so Piecoro and others who are doing these sorts of things should be commended.

I think Olney linked to this same article earlier. The first thing that came to mind was “wow, they’re quoting McCracken, and using legitimate baseball metrics”

Drew thinks he can be a .300/.400/.600 hitter, and wasn’t happy with your modest “somewhere in between” comment.

He certainly could do much better. I think a boost in power is more likely than a permanent boost in average (any .270 hitter can hit .310 in a season) but he’s young enough and obviously has enough talent to do better than that.

But I do stats, and most everyone else who does them has him between .260-.270. After hitting .238, he should probably get back to there and get more ambitious after.
