From Peter Gammons:
“The sabermetrics guys in their garages never understand these things.”
Garage? What kind of lap of luxury do you think I live in? Garages are for people with servants and stable ponies, Pete.
Most of the rest of the article is behind ESPN’s pay service. While I normally might consider, I have a rule that I never pay people to insult me unless they’re wearing leather. Besides, since ESPN has had DIPS on their stats page for several years now, who exactly owes whom money here?

Always, always, always, the innovative stuff is coming from somewhere that can’t be controlled by the incumbents. It’s just some guys doing something that the powers that be consider to just be a toy. IBM didn’t think that personal computers were more than such until MS started eating their lunch.
When they start feeling the need to lash out about it being just a toy is when you know that the impact is being felt.
Actually, Petey is a few years behind the times here, as ESPN has had new stats for some time.
I think even more than the stats, he’s reacting to rise of written baseball analysis that adds context to the numbers, and which can be found on blogs across the internet. No longer do they have to go through the writers as gatekeepers.
This is even more of a threat to him than the stats themselves.
Which is sad, since he’s one of the more enjoyable MSM baseball personalities.
Anyway, keep on keepin on.
