The votes from the writers are in and Goose Gossage is heading to Cooperstown. Jim Rice barely missed the 75% needed and Mark McGwire finished with only 23.6% of the vote in a glorious confirmation of ex post facto laws everywhere.

Rice now has one more year to get elected, if not he’ll drop into the Veterans Committee pool where hopefully he’ll drop back behind Lou Whitaker and Will Clark where he belongs. 14 out of the 15 writers for ESPN voted for Rice, which means that the writers as a whole generally have more sense than those for the “worldwide leader in sports.” Granted ESPN’s Rob Neyer and Keith Law were denied votes because apparently being qualified, disqualifies you.
