Congratulations to Tigres del Licey

The Caribbean World Series is over and Licey has emerged as the champion.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Caribbean World Series specifically and international baseball in general. Maybe it’s my soccer affinity or what have you, but I do find the prospect of baseball in other countries to be intriguing. The number of issues I agree with Bud Selig on can be counted on one hand, but the viability of international baseball is one of them. Back when I had ESPN Deportes, I really enjoyed their coverage of these games. Baseball can do more to ferment the game in places where its trying to get a foothold (like Holland), and I for one would look forward to more countries coming to love the sport I love. I always get angered when Americans argue that it’s un-american to like soccer, I think it’s equally true for other countries to resist a sport like baseball simply because it’s just an “American” sport. The folks in the Dominican Republic certainly don’t seem to think so.

I share your love for the international flavor of baseball.

Imagine a market like India, where Cricket is king, if it could somehow develop a love for our favorite game…

    Keep up the good work.

We were at the 4:00 pm game on Tuesday, Feb. 5/08 to watch Tigre de Licey vs. Venezuela. The DR people love the game and the whole series was the talk of the country. Licey won 2 to 1 in the ninth and ended up winning the Carribean series. I had purchased a Lcey cao and was rooting for them all the way, although most of the Dominicans in Puerto Plata, where I was vacationing were cheering for the Aguila’s. Great fun to be had by all!
