Baseball is Drowning… in a Sea of Green

October 25th, 2007 · No Comments

My soccer friends all lick their chops that Baseball is going to be the one big sport it supplants in this country in its rise to national prominence. They certainly don’t want to hear me pipe in with actual facts and information (attendance records set, again).

Maybe coming from someone else it might sink in. Emperor Bud has his beady little sights set on catching the NFL in terms of revenue. Sure $6 billion in revenue seems like a lot of money, but you just wait until the X-games generation grows up.

The reality is that our 24 year old selves only vaguely resemble our 14 year old selves. Our 34 year old selves only vaguely resemble our 24 year old selves and so on. The assumption that what people like to do when they’re 14 will be the same as when they’re 34 is obviously faulty and yet no one in the field of advertising demographics ever seems to absorb that little bit of info.

In short, baseball isn’t dying, competitive imbalance isn’t ruining the game and I’m not abrasive.
