White Sox Place Uribe on Waivers?

March 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Kenny Williams may occasionally take more grief from the stat geek community than warranted, but he’s gonna deserve what they’re about to say this time. Mere months after signing Juan Uribe to a one year $4.5 million deal, they have apparently placed him on waivers. No one with any sense is going to claim him as he surely is going to fetch a lot less than $4.5 million when he soon becomes a free agent. Juan’s glove ain’t what it was, and his bat was never great and appears to be getting worse. There’s not much reason to want him and even if you do, there’s no reason to want him at $4.5 million.

So Williams is going to wind up paying Uribe $4 million to not play for the White Sox. Setting $4 million ablaze may not seem like much in the current player market, but that’s probably more or less what Barry Bonds costs you right now so it’s not exactly a turn of events Kenny Williams is going to save in his scrapbook.

er… he didn’t set that $4 million ablaze.

I don’t get how all of these things happened:

1)Everyone was certain that Uribe was placed on “irrevocable” waivers, despite the fact that…
2)It seems there is no way to confirm whether or not a player is on irrevocable waivers until
    3) Therefore, the incorrect assumption that it was irrevocable waivers led to the incorrect, and not very reasonable assumption that Williams planned to let Uribe walk away and pay him $4 million.

I don’t get how anyone would assume Williams wouldn’t realize that, though he may not get $4 million for Uribe from some team, he certainly could get $2 or $3 million or more.
