Here it is, which teams will play which teams.
A good draw for my team, but we’re capable of losing to anyone, so no point in getting too excited.
I’ll try and run some sims as soon as possible.

as an english reader… bring it on! i think england should expect 9 pnts out of 3 games though. we shall see. if american fan numbers are correct england vs usa will be a really really well supported match

It certainly will be one of the highest rated of the 1st round matches here (though the very 1st game will likely be the highest rated, particularly since Mexico is involved).
I think this may be the very first time the USA will be a clear favorite to advance out of the group (not sure what the odds were in 2004). But would I be completely stunned if the USA doesn’t advance? No. I’d be a little stunned if England doesn’t, though.

2004=1994. Oops!

A quick perusal of the first set of sims suggests that England has indeed been the team with a legitimate chance of winning it that has been helped the most by the draw. They won roughly 10% of the time now.

The Ivory Coast and the Swiss look like they’re slim chances have been hurt quite a bit by the draw.
Will try and get the sims up tonight.

Terrible draw for South America. Great chances to have ARG-URU, BRA-CHI and NED-PAR in the 1/8 finals.

As a Serbian, I think that we have excellent group! Germany is not that strong as it was 2006. Ghana and Aussies are tough competitors but Serbia is better.
I am looking forward to face USA in last 16.
Hope that Serbians will now have more than 1,15% chances to win WC.

The Serbians are in a position to continue the run from their great qualifying campaign. They drew the Group of Death last time, but even so I think you’d agree they still played poorly overall in 2006.
The Serbians are one of about a dozen teams whose chances of winning are not good, but probably greater than zero. One of these days (like the Euros in 2004) somebody like that is going to steal one of these. Maybe this is the right time for such a team to win one. The best bet for these teams will be for others to thin the field and then spring a couple of upsets.

Dutza you just gave me a great idea for a series of posts. “How can they win?” So I could go through the data dump, find a sim where the team won the Cup, and go through their results to get there.

Group D of “Death” 2010 version, imho!

Voros, love your idea on “How can they win” — looking forward to the 32 posts 😉

There is interesting situation in bottom half of the draw. All teams from “The Fantastic Four” (Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, Spain) are in that part of the draw. If one of the favorites slips to second place in group then we might have “The Clash of The Titans” allready in the round of 16, and the quarters in bottom half will be even more ineresting.
