Chuck LaMar’s Soft Landing

The baseball industry is like any other: interview well and you keep getting jobs. Act like I do? Food stamps, baby.

On that note, Chuck LaMar has landed a scouting gig with the Phillies. LaMar, you might remember, was the General Manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for most of their existence. While not the easiest assignment in the history of baseball, he sure didn’t seem to do a very good job. Whenever a front office made a mysterious decision without any apparent explanation, even money it was the Devil Rays. I’m guessing Chuck interviews well, but for all I know he might be a super wizard at the job assigned to him and it’s the GM part he had trouble with.

As for Pat Gillick, among the nicest people I happened to meet in my short time in baseball. More on that later.

How bad of a fit is it? It’s hard to find much fault with his skills as a talent evaluator in TB. They usually drafted early, but they hit on an awful lot of players.

Just don’t put him in charge of negotiating trades.
